Campus Progress Statement on the Foundation for Educational Success’s New For-Profit Standards
WASHINGTON, DC – Campus Progress, the youth outreach arm of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement from David Halperin, Director of Campus Progress and Senior Vice President of the Center for American Progress, in response to the new standards released by the Foundation for Education Success at http://www.edsuccessfoundation.org/standards/:
"The document includes some important principles that, as a matter of ethics and educational quality, these schools should have accepted a long time ago. Instead, some of these schools have taken unfair advantage of students and taxpayers for years and only now, in the face of pressure from the government, the media, and their own students, are they even talking about changing course. The true test will be whether the schools will actually live up to these standards, and whether they put real teeth into them. Bare disclosure requirements, without real efforts to ensure that students understand what they're getting into, are not enough. But it will be a positive step if for-profit schools truly start competing by behaving responsibly and ethically, and by providing higher quality educations to students."
