Campus Progress Commemorates the Two-Year Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act

Washington D.C. — Campus Progress – the youth outreach arm of the nation’s leading progressive think tank, the Center for American Progress – is pleased to mark the two-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Campus Progress also wants to again thank those who made health-care reform possible—from the individuals and community leaders in cities and neighborhoods across the country who helped build support to the members of Congress and President Obama, who made it official.

In December, Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, shared the news that 2.5 million young adults have gained access to health insurance thanks to the provision allowing them to stay on their parents’ plan after college, saying it “is further evidence that the Affordable Care Act is working.” As a result of the law, she said, “Many more young adults have gained access to preventive care and life-saving treatment.”

In a conference call with student journalists this week, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated that, “As many young adults have started their lives, they haven't had to worry about how to get health insurance coverage. These are great achievements, considering that a little over a year ago young Americans were one of the most vulnerable groups.”

And Anne Johnson, the recently-named Director of Camus Progress added that, “This is a real victory. The Affordable Care Act directly addresses the problem of young Americans going without healthcare because they could not afford it or their employers did not offer it. Now millions of newly-insured young Americans have the health care they need.”
