What You Need To Know About Donald Rumsfeld’s Book

Hey, look, Rummy got a book deal. [AP] [Reuters] [Washington Post]

Donald Rumsfeld, notorious Iraq war architect famous for “stuff happens,” “shock and awe,” and knowing where Iraq’s WMDs are ("in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat"), is writing a memoir.

Here’s what you need to know:

Who’s publishing it: Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin.

How much he’s getting: Unknown, but he declined an advance, and all the proceeds go “to a not-for-profit foundation he set up to fund global microfinance efforts, foster public service among promising young people through educational grants and build links between America and central Asia.” Hey, kids, sorry about starting a war, here’s some cash.

When it’s coming out: 2010.

What it covers: His whole life, from his youth, his work in the private sector to “when he was a Republican congressman from Illinois and continued through his work in several administrations, including defense secretary under former President Ford…” And, of course, his six…ahem…distinguished years under the current President Bush.

What his publisher says: Sentinel publisher Adrian Zackheim says Rumsfeld’s book will be “refreshingly and divertingly candid” and that Rummy is “a fantastic storyteller and he has extraordinary recall, as you would think. And he’s fantastic about details, just like you would think.” Because if Iraq War architects had anything, it was attention to detail. (Plan for reconstruction? What plan for reconstruction?)

What Rumsfeld says: “I don’t plan to write any kind of a ‘quickie Washington book.’ I plan to take my time. I expect it (the book) will be very well researched and carefully documented.”

In case you can’t wait ’til 2010 for pathetic excuse-making from an Iraq war architect, Doug Feith (the former Undersecretary of Defense who General Tommy Franks called “the stupidest f***ing guy on the planet"), has a book out this week. Steal it from a bookstore today! [Amazon]
