It's All Fun And Games Until The Vatican Lists It As A Sin
March 10, 2008
Ah, the days when there were just seven deadly sins. It was easier back then. A guy could do some drugs, have a huge carbon footprint, and genetically mutate things to his heart’s content without fear of pesky fire and brimstone. Like we said: An easier time. [USA Today]
The Vatican, in an attempt to be, well, the Vatican, has released its list of new areas of sinful behavior. Chances are, you’ve already racked up some transgressions.
Here’s what we’re looking at: The Catholic church has listed drugs, pollution, genetic manipulations as well as social and economic injustices as new areas that get a "no-no."
Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published Sunday by the Vatican’s daily newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, that known sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole.
"While sin used to concern mostly the individual, today it has mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization," said Girotti, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions.
Girotti also noted that drugs "weaken the mind and obscure intelligence," and pollution, as well as the widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor, "cause an unbearable social injustice."
Pollution as a sin? We’re cool with that. Wait. The Vatican is just getting around to listing getting high as bad behavior?
