Creating a Government By and For Millennial America

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Center for American Progress

In 2008, Millennials crashed onto the political scene, proving to be a decisive influence in President Obama's victory. Nevertheless, pundits and commentators called it a fluke. In 2012, they were proven wrong. This diverse generation’s investment in elections isn’t an anomaly; it is a sign of the progressive values and priorities guiding their continued civic participation.

Yet while Millennials are engaged, less than 30% believe that their voice is currently represented in the democratic process. This is a problem that we can solve. Using this generation’s unique ethos and commitment to pragmatic problem-solving, Millennials across the country have collaborated to design their vision for a 21st century democracy and reject the idea that our system is too broken, too stagnant, and too outdated. They have identified the parts of the system that need to be fixed while articulating what a true democracy should look like.

Join the authors of the Roosevelt Institute | Campus Network's Government by and for Millennial America project and panelists from Campus Progress and other organizations as they present the report's findings and discuss what they mean for today's policy debates. The question of the government's role in addressing our immediate economic challenges will provide a jumping off point for a conversation ranging from student debt to youth unemployment. Get a look into what Millennials want from their government and their plan to bring it to fruition.
