New School Politics: Recognizing Political Activism Among Black Youth at the University of Chicago

Campus Progress and the University of Chicago Organization of Black Students celebrates over 40 years of black youth activism on campus and across the country. In this day of events, students, activists, artists, and scholars will explore the current status of black youth activism and the role hip-hop plays in mobilizing black youth.
- Understanding Barriers to Black Youth Activism: This panel will discuss the vibrant role of African American youth in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Additionally, panelists will explore today’s social, economic, and political conditions that disconnect black youth from political life. The panel will be moderated by WVON radio personality, TJ Crawford. Panelists will include: University of Chicago History Professor Adam Green; University of Illinois-Chicago Educational Policy Professor David Stovall; and spoken word artist Kevin Coval. The panel will be from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
- Spoken Word Performances by Lady Aqua, and Jessica & Deja—local spoken word artists known for challenging understandings of race, power, and politics. The performances will begin at 1:40 pm.
- Hip-Hop Culture and the Politics of Relevance: This panel will point out creative forms of political and civic engagement that black youth have participated in to remain involved in their communities. Ultimately, the panel will seek to understand how hip-hop music and entertainment has been infused with political education. The panel will be moderated by WVON radio personality TJ Crawford. Panelists include: rapper J. Kwest; Paul Ford; and Willie JR Fleming. The panel will be from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
