Party with a Purpose: Host a “Sand and Sorrow” House Party

Thursday, December 6, 2007
8:00 – 9:45 pm EST/PST

Join activists and viewers across the country to watch the HBO premier of Sand and Sorrow, a powerful film about the tragic and ongoing genocide in Darfur. Campus Progress and the ENOUGH Project have teamed up to coordinate and organize house parties across the U.S. to view and discuss the film together. House parties are great, informal ways to gather friends, family, co-workers, students and neighbors together to foster discussion and community around an important issue.

How to Plan a House Party:

Step 1: Find a Location
You can host a house party – in your classroom, living room, dorm lounge, church or anywhere else that you can comfortably see a screen and invite some viewers. It’s as simple as inviting some friends, getting some food, turning on your television and tuning in to HBO at 8:00 p.m. If you are a student on a campus that doesn’t have access to HBO, Campus Progress can mail you a copy of the film for free to watch at the same time (the film must be returned).

Step 2: Register Your Party
Email us your name and address at organize@campusprogress.org. ENOUGH, Campus Progress and HBO can provide you with materials, discussion questions, and tips on how to throw a good house party – all you need to do is get the space and the people…(and maybe some popcorn!). Just email us to register and get the ball rolling. Students need to register by Thursday, November 29th.

Step 3: Throw an Awesome Party
Tune into HBO at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on Dec. 6, 2007, or watch the DVD we provide. Download our discussion questions to lead the conversation at your party.

Step 4: Join a Call with John Prendergast, Samantha Power and Nick Kristof after the film
The chat will give you the opportunity to talk about the film and discover practical ways that you can make a difference to stop the genocide. The call-in information is forthcoming.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to watch and act in solidarity. Learn about the genocide in Darfur and make a small impact on humanity…all while in front of your own tv.

Email us today at organize@campusprogress.org to let us know if you’d like to throw a house party. Check back here often to see where others across the country (and near you!) will be hosting parties.

About the Film:

SAND AND SORROW details the historically tragic events that have given rise to an Arab-dominated government’s willingness to kill and displace its own indigenous African people, and examines the international community’s legacy of failure to respond to such profound crimes against humanity in the past. To date, as many as 400,000 civilians in Darfur have perished from violence, starvation and disease.
