M-1

M-1, Mutulu Olugbala, is a hip hop artist from the critically acclaimed underground hip-hop duo Dead Prez. Dead Prez brings hard-hitting style and politically active lyrics, focusing on racism, critical pedagogy, activism against governmental hypocrisy, and corporate control over the media, especially hip-hop record labels. In June 2006, the network Starz InBlack aired an original documentary called “Dead Prez: It’s Bigger than Hip Hop.” The film featured interviews and live footage with Dead Prez and focused on topics such as the inadequacies of the public education system, minority entrepreneurship, and social revolution. M-1’s political consciousness was sparked when he read Alex Haley’s “The Autobiography of Malcolm X. M-1 released his first solo album “Confidential” in 2006 through Sotti/Koch Records.
