- The National Asian American Student Conference (NAASCon) is held biennially and will be at Northwestern University on November 3-5, 2006. This year’s theme, Building Bridges, Connecting Movements, stems from the need for our generation of Asian Pacific American (APA) students to identify the intersections between seemingly disconnected issues that face our community. Through NAASCon 2006, students will develop a greater understanding of the connections and complexities of salient issues facing the APA community today; build the skills necessary to translate your passion, energy, and knowledge into action; and foster a sense of unity and solidarity among APA students across the country. Economic security and healthcare are great concerns for Asian communities. In 2005, the number of Asians in poverty increased to 1.4 million. The number of Asians without health insurance coverage rose to 2.3 million. While government programs that support the uninsured and poor are being cut, the wealthiest are getting even wealthier from tax cuts. Hemi Kim, Policy Analyst at the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, and Yanin Senachai, Resource Center Coordinator at Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, will lead this workshop, entitled “Economic Justice: Reclaiming Wealth and Health,” to give an overview of the growing economic inequality in the U.S. and introduce one often overlooked area of activism for economic justice: tax policy reform. - "Affordable Health Coverage and Young Americans" – Featuring Senator Tom Daschle, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress. Why should college students and other young Americans care about the nation’s health coverage crisis? How will health system reform affect their lives – today and in the future? Young adults represent one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of the population without health insurance in the U.S. Unless young adults are enrolled in college full-time and can remain on a parent’s health plan, they often cannot gain access to affordable health coverage early in their careers. When they do receive treatment the rising cost of health care places further pressure on their already cash-strapped pocketbooks. For these reasons and more, the Center for American Progress Action Fund is committed to helping young adults be catalysts for change. As activists in their community or campus, this event will encourage young Montanans to make providing affordable coverage for all Americans a priority for their generation. Tuesday, October 10 at The Loft, 424 N. Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana. 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by The Center for American Progress Action Fund, and co-sponsored by the University of Montana Students for Choice, Students for Economic and Social Justice, College Democrats, Forward Montana, Montana Women Vote, and Campus Progress.
