One Thousand Students Gather for Annual Campus Progress Conference

Washington, D.C. – Today 1000 students from 48 states and 275 colleges and universities will meet in Washington, D.C. for the 2nd annual Campus Progress National Student Conference. With the theme, “Building a Movement,” the conference will provide students from across the country with opportunities to network, participate in skill seminars and issue discussions, and hear from a diverse group of notable speakers, including keynote speaker Senator Barack Obama.

“The growth of Campus Progress, and the success of this conference, is powerful evidence that the progressive youth movement is gaining strength every day,” said David Halperin, director of Campus Progress. “We increased attendance capacity this year by 50 percent, but the demand is even stronger than that. Young people have the energy and ideas to revitalize America, and our annual conference is a great way for them to come together and build a progressive movement.”

Among other speakers at the Campus Progress Conference are: Paul Begala, commentator and political strategist; Samantha Power, author, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide; MoveOn.org’s Eli Pariser; Rev. James Forbes, senior minister, The Riverside Church, New York; U.S. Representatives George Miller of California and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin; Joseph “Fat Joe” Cartagena, rapper, actor, entrepreneur; Joe Lockhart, former press secretary for Bill Clinton; and John D. Podesta, president and CEO, Center for American Progress.

The Conference is part of a three-day Campus Progress program that includes a day-long grassroots training (July 11), cosponsored with Wellstone Action and the Student PIRGs, and an all-day journalism training session open only to students active in Campus Progress(July 13) with Seymour Hersh, EJ Dionne, Amy Sullivan, and others.

Other conference highlights:

  • Presentation of the first Campus Progress Awards – to student-run publications, to student journalists, organizers, and t-shirt designers, and, for Action Campaign of the Year, to the Sudan Divestment Task Force, a student-led group that has compelled eight schools already to divest from companies doing business with Sudan.
  • The launch of Campus Progress’s Debt Hits Hard campaign, aimed at making college more affordable and featuring three innovative videos illustrating how the rising cost of college, a deteriorating financial aid system, and lending practices that place bigger burdens on students and families are limiting opportunity for young Americans today.
  • The announcement that 10 student newspapers or magazine, on campuses ranging from Fisk University to the University of Alabama, will receive Campus Progress grants and join the Campus Progress network of publications, now totaling 45.

Campus Progress, launched in February 2005 at the Center for American Progress, works to strengthen progressive voices on college and university campuses nationwide and empower new generations of leaders. Campus Progress runs a daily web magazine, CampusProgress.org; supports student publications and issue campaigns; and has held over 220 campus events.
