University of Colorado’s “Gun Dorms” Are A Dud. University of Colorado students have refused to live in dorms specifically designed for students aged 21 and older with concealed-carry gun permits.  In August of this year, University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs and Boulder campuses announced they would create the “gun dorms”. David Burnett, a representative of Students for Concealed Carry on campus, told the Denver Post that students who meet all legal requirements for concealed-carry shouldn't have to move into segregated dorms. However, not "everyone who is armed is being forthcoming" about it, and the "gun dorms" continue to draw little student interest. [Gawker]

Bottle-Throwing Students Face Sanctions at Hampden-Sydney. Following the re-election of President Barack Obama, a small group of students at the all-male Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia responded with racial slurs and violence. About 40 young men threw bottles and set off fireworks in front of the Minority Student Union on campus. Hampden-Sydney College's first African-American President, Chris Howard, responded to the events saying he was disappointed in the "harmful, senseless episode," and that "every member of this community is insulted by what happened, regardless of their race, creed, color, or what have you." Five of the students who participated in the offensive election-night activities are being sanctioned by the university, and could face expulsion. [Huffington Post]

Fiscal Cliff Could Sideline Immigration Reform. President Barack Obama’s re-election was bolstered by overwhelming support from people of color, which brought with it optimism for comprehensive immigration reform. However, it seems as though the Obama administration will first have to deal with major fiscal issues before it can "engage in the kind of salesmanship analysts believe is essential to sell broad immigration policy changes to the public." Hope has not diminished, though. Daniel Rodriguez, an Arizona activist with United We Dream said "[w]e have a check to cash, and 2013 is going to be a new year.” [Huffington Post]

Insider Claims Cheating Tolerated at UNC. Mary Willingham, a reading specialist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, claimed that athletes who "didn't know what a paragraph was" remained eligible to play sports at the school, because the academic support system tolerated and fostered cheating. “There are serious literacy deficits and they cannot do the course work here,” Willingham said. Her allegations have prompted four investigations, one of which is being led by former North Carolina Governor Jim Martin. The NCAA has not involved itself in the situation, but is monitoring the progress of the investigations. [News & Observer]
