Students Protest Education Cuts, Are Jailed; Study Suggests Environment Concerns Not As Prevalent
For Cutting Higher Ed Funding, Michigan to Lose More. Michigan’s public universities are facing another cut in funding. The state is preparing for the loss of $4.2 million in federal funding through the College Access Challenge Grant program because it did not comply with a federal rule instituted in 2008 that set standards for state spending on education. Gov. Rick Synder explained the cuts as a necessary measure taken to combat budget deficits. Others, however, believe that tax cuts and an increased spending on things like correctional facilities have been the cause of the cuts to higher education. [M Live]

Study: Students Aren’t As Concerned with Environment. The number of college students who consider themselves “environmentally conscious” has dropped to the lowest rates in 40 years, according a new study. Examining data collected from college freshman over the past four decades, the study finds that the current students are less concerned about the environment than at any time since the beginning of the modern environmental movement. The findings contradict the common belief that today’s students—raised in an era of increased concern over things such as global warming and deforestation—maintain a higher sense of environmental concern. Experts presume that perhaps students have become desensitized to environmental concerns due to an inundation of information on the environment in their lifetimes. [Huffington Post]
Students Protest Education Cuts, Are Jailed. Dozens of students from California colleges and universities were arrested recently while protesting state cuts to higher education. Overall, 72 students were arrested on trespassing charges after entering the state capital. The students were protesting the more than $1.5 billion cuts in higher education cuts over the last four years, arguing that the slashing is an unnecessary and destructive way to fix the states budget issues. The students were also rallying in favor of the state taking on a “Millionaires Tax,” similar to that proposed by President Obama in his State of the Union, in order to fix the state’s budget issues in lieu of cuts to education.
