Student Wants a White Student Union; CTU Strike Grinds to a Halt; Chick-Fil-A and Gay

White Student Union On Campus. Townson University student, Matthew Heimbach, plans to form a White Student Union on campus. In his school’s newspaper, Heimbach compares a White Student Union to a Black Student Union, the mission of which would be to promote white heroes the same way other groups promote minority heroes. This isn’t the first time Heimbach has put forth a controversial group. His Youth for Western Civilization was a success until it drew white pride graffiti across campus. Heimbach has yet to submit an application for the White Student Union to the Student Government Association, though he claims to have 17 students interested in joining. [Baltimore.com]

Teachers Back to Work, Students Back to School. Chicago’s first teachers’ strike in 25 came to an end Tuesday as the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and the city settled on new labor framework agreements. The teachers’ union argue that new student evaluation systems emphasize standardized test scores too heavily and penalize teachers too drastically. The new deal, which reduced emphasis on standardized test scores and lessened punishments on teachers, may take up to two weeks to become in effect. In the meantime, hundreds of teachers and thousands of students are returning to class this morning. [ABCnews.com]

Athlete Suspended for Homophobic Slur. Last Saturday, Toronto Blue Jay Yunel Escobar stepped onto the field with Spanish text written on his eye black strips.  A close up verified that his eye black read “Tu ere maricon,” Spanish for “You’re a f*ggot.” At a news conference Tuesday, Escobar apologized, saying, “I’m sorry, I didn’t want this to be misinterpreted by the gay community.” Misinterpreted? He claimed that the word in English doesn’t have the same meaning as it does in Spanish, and that “maricon” is an inside joke among teammates. In the end, he said that he completely agrees with the suspension, and the 82K that his time off will cost him is being donated to “You Can Play” and GLAAD. [LGBTQ Nation]

Chick-fil-Gay. In a press release, a Chicago-based Chick-fil-A agreed to end funding to anti-LGBTQ groups. The chicken chain announced that they “will treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.” LGBTQ activists are thrilled with the progress, calling it a “step forward for Chick-fil-A and the LGBT community.”  [Huffington Post]
