Student Cat Killer Caught; Male Student-Columnist Gives Advice on Menstruation

IU Student Arrested for Theft and Animal Cruelty: Accused of Torturing, Killing Cats. Christopher Gugliuzza, a 19-year-old student at Indiana University, was arrested for allegedly torturing and killing cats. On Dec. 3, Gugliuzza visited the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, partially filled out paperwork to adopt a cat named Lennox, but ran out with the cat and drove home before completing the forms. His girlfriend, who reported the incident to the police, said he then proceeded to torture the cat and left it for dead in a wooded area. Thankfully, Lennox was found alive days later and has since been nursed back to health. Gugliuzza has admitted to the theft and the deaths of two other cats. [Indiana Daily Student]

Male Student-Columnist at Temple University Gives Advice On Menstruation. For his final column in the Temple News, John Corrigan wrote about menstruation. Corrigan attempted to give advice to male readers on how to handle their girlfriends during that time of the month. "Your appearance, your performance, your family, your friends -- everything is fair game for critique when you’re caught in a woman’s PMSing scorn," Corrigan wrote. The column was met with widespread criticism from the Temple community. A commentator under the name "Drew" said "You, sir, obviously do not actually have a girlfriend," and "Anne" wrote "[t]his article actually made me cringe, and I’m not even on my period." To Tackle Climate Change, Students Target College Portfolios. Students at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania asked college administrators to reduce the school's carbon footprint by divesting endowment money from coal, oil, and gas stocks. A direct imitation of the student movement of the 1980s to divest from stocks of businesses working in South Africa under apartheid, this tactic is being used more frequently at schools across the country to combat climate change. Students have faced challenges at schools with large endowments, like Harvard and Swarthmore. Smaller institutions such as Unity College in Maine, and Hampshire College in Massachusetts, which have both agreed to dump their fossil fuel stocks thanks to student-led actions. [NYTimes]

University of Notre Dame Revamps LGBT Support Services. The University of Notre Dame announced its plans to start a new support and service student organization for LBTQ students and their allies. Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff have pushed for decades for the official recognition of a Gay-Straight Alliance by the university, and although this recent decision is not exactly what was asked for, said co-president of the Progressive Student Alliance Alex Coccia, "[t]his is very good news [...] The university is recognizing a student organization. It's going to provide the peer-to-peer support that is needed."  [The Observer]
