Riot Erupts on Ole Miss’ Campus After Obama is Reelected; ROTC Student Membership Steadily Swelling
Ole Miss Erupts After Obama Wins Reelection. Students at the University of Mississippi protested Obama’s reelection by burning Obama campaign signs and blocking streets—drawing the ire of police who arrived on the scene to prevent the riot from escalating. About 300 to 400 students threw rocks and yelled racial slurs late in to the night. The Chancellor of the university, Dan Jones and other school leaders and students condemned the use of uncivil language and has said there will be a thorough investigation of the event. [Buzz Feed]
For-Profit College Shares Fall Dramatically When Obama Reelected. For-profit college shares plummeted after Obama was reelected. Under the Obama administration, for-profit schools have been strapped with new regulations that require them to meet certain performance targets or risk losing their access to federal student loans. If Mitt Romney was elected, industry observers said the Department of Education would get new leadership, which could lead to policy changes to dismantle the regulations imposed by Obama. Cleveland State University Plans To Be Tobacco Free. The university’s board of trustees approved a policy that will ban tobacco on campus by September 2013. The policy makes exceptions only for tobacco use in research and clinical or religious ceremonial purposes, with prior approval. Stephanie McHenry, vice president for business affairs and finance, defended the board’s decision saying, “our motivation is not to be punitive but to have a safe, healthy and respectful learning environment." ROTC Steadily Growing On College Campuses. The number of college students in the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps has grown 50 percent since the 2005-06 school year. Students are joining for a variety of reasons including the possibility of scholarship money, a job after graduation, and leadership training or to bolster their résumés. But, most of all, students are saying they simply want to serve their country. [Washington Post]
