Report Finds Low Desire for STEM Jobs Among Young Americans; Wisconsin Official Resigns

Brain Drain. Young Americans between 16 and 25 are less likely to pursue science, technology, and engineering jobs, according to a new survey from Lemelson-MIT. The results indicate that young adults see massive barriers to entering these professions, including their lack of preparation for pursuing the fields and the increasing difficulty of doing so. While 80 percent of the respondents said they’d be interested in courses that would help them “become more inventive and creative”, only 22 percent said they would be inspired by careers that would give them a chance to change the world. More students would rather pursue a career that offered the most stability, according to the report. [Huffington Post]

Athletics Official Resigns. A University of Wisconsin athletic official has resigned following recent allegations that he made unwanted sexual advances to a male student employee of the school’s athletic department. John Chadima, the senior associate director of the university’s athletic program, allegedly hosted a Rose Bowl viewing party at his hotel suite where alcohol was served to all guests, including those under the age of 21. As the party was ending, Chadima reportedly asked the student to stay and have a drink with him. Chadima then allegedly attempted to grope the student, saying he could have the student employee fired if he resisted. [CNN]

Don’t Bet On It. A former campus police officer at Central Michigan University faces five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of misconduct involving two female students. The officer, 34-year-old Jeffrey Card, was on patrol when he gave the students a ride from a bar. Authorities say Card took the women to a remote dirt road where he made a bet with them—if their blood alcohol levels were higher than 0.05 percent, he reportedly said, they had to show him their breasts. The students lost the bet and obliged before being dropped off at a campus residence hall. Card was suspended after the incident and later resigned. [CBS Detroit]

Fordham Joins the 99 Percent. Students across the country have brought the Occupy movement to their campuses—but at Fordham, a professor is leading the charge. Mark Naison, the chair of African and African-American Studies at Fordham, founded the “99 Percent Club” in an effort to bring the cause to students. “I have been a part of group of scholars who has been talking about this for the last 10 years and seem to have no impact whatsoever,” Naison said. “And this movement starts, and it’s the question of the day.” Naison is unsure of what actions the club will take in the coming weeks, but admits that future conflict with Fordham’s administration is possible.
