Hope College Refuses to Remove Anti-Gay Policy
Hope College, a conservative school in Holland, Mich., is refusing to alter a policy adopted in 1995 that condemns "homosexual acts" and gay advocacy. This decision is following the college's refusal in 2009 to host an event Dustin Lance Black, a gay screenwriter who worked on Milk, to speak on campus during a screening of the film. The board released the following statement on Friday:
The college’s current position on homosexuality is based on its interpretation of scripture. It is recognized that well-intentioned Christians may disagree on scriptural interpretation. Still, humbly and respectfully, the college aligns itself in its interpretation with its founding denomination, the Reformed Church in America, the orthodox Christian Church throughout the ages, and other Christian colleges and universities.
The school's board went on to create a trustee committee that would further examine the 1995 policy.
